To travel economically, youth hostels are always reliable. (Youth Hostel in Portugal = “Pusadas de juventude”) We have decided to stay couple of days at a Youth Hostel in Catalazete, in a beachtown called Oeiras, about 20 minutes west of Lisbon. Double room with WC/shower cost 30 euro, 15 euro each. (about 2000yen) Breakfast included. The whole Atlantic Ocean is right in front of the hostel!

We have joined to gather in the “BOOM festival 2004″ held at Idanha-a-Nova lake, Portugal, Aug 26th-31st. The site was located in a very dry area, and the sun was extremely strong, but we could swim in the beautiful lake during the day. What a magnificant and international party! It was very well organized, more than 20,000 people gathering. We were amazed how sophisticated the trance scene is in Portugal and Spain. Very nice and wild crowd! The music was all the way progressive, and the last DJ (Nerd from Scotland?) was rocking.

5月9日から９月26日まで141日間、バルセロナで開催されている世界的なカルチャーイベント。”gathering that will move the world”とも言われているそう。メイン・テーマは”cultural diversity, sustainable development and conditions for peace.” (文化の多様性、持続的発展、平和への条件）期間中は市内で様々なトーク、講演会、コンサート、パフォーマンス、展示会などが開かれます。

午後８時ミラノ駅発の寝台列車は、次の日の朝10時にスペイン・バルセロナ駅に到着。およそ12時間乗って、130ユーロ（およそ18000円）。ヨーロッパの旅は、何かとお金がかかります。
バルセロナもとても魅力的だけれども観光は後回しにして、まずはポルトガルへ行きたい！ということで、次にバルセロナ発リスボン行きの飛行機を探したところ、翌日の朝の便しかないらしい。というわけで、今日は一泊バルセロナでするとして、ホテルをとり、快晴の中、街に繰り出しました。
まずは “Temple de la Sagrada Familia”（サグラダ・ファミリア）へ。スペインの建築士の巨匠、Antoni Gaudiの名を世界的に有名にした作品で、1882年に建築が始まり現在もまだ建設中の教会です。一つ一つの塔、柱、壁のデコレーションは、聖書を忠実に再現していたり、100以上の花や動物の装飾が施されていたりと、想像以上のスケールと繊細さに圧倒されてしまいます。塔の中をうずまきのように上って行ける階段は350段ありますが、ところどころにバルセロナの街を一望できる絶景ポイントがあるし、階段をのぼらないと見られない細かな装飾がまぢかで見れるのでおすすめです。
教会の中はどこを見ても「ため息」なんですが、特に印象に残ったのが回廊の中にそびえ立つ柱が、ほんものの木そっくりにデザインしてあること。普通ならまっすぐな柱が途中から枝のように分かれているのが写真でも確認できると思います。Gaudiは”The master is the tree”と、自分のアトリエのすぐそばに生えていたポプラの木をまねして、この柱をデザインし、”The inside of the Temple will be like a wood”と、このテンプルの中を森のようにしたいと考えていたようです。
Gaudiは他にもこんなことを言っています。
“The great book, always open and which we should make an effort to read, is that of Nature; the other books are taken from it, and in them there are the mistakes and interpretations of men.”
“The aim of construction is to free us from the sun and the rain; it imitates the tree, as the latter is a collection of sun and rain.”
“We cannot help but notice the coincidence between a beautiful building and the structure of trees”
“Plants are fractal on the outside…. and animals are fractal on the inside! One only has to think, for an instant, of the magnificent arboreal structure of the circulatory system or the nervous system.”
将来の建築というものは自然から学び、自然を模倣するべきだと。なぜなら、それが一番論理的であり、長期的であり、経済的であると言うのがGaudiの哲学の一つでした。Gaudiは、1920年、74歳の時に電車にはねられて亡くなってしまったのですが、今でもGaudiの描いていた神殿の完成を目指して、建設費が寄付という形でほとんどが個人から集められているということです。さすが芸術の街、バルセロナ！ポルトガルから帰って来たら、Gaudiの他の作品も含めて、この街を堪能したいと思います。
イタリアを離れ、今日からポルトガルへ！といっても、ミラノからバルセロナまで夜行列車で行って、バルセロナで安いフライト・チケットを探す予定。こういう少しずつ目的地に近づいて行く旅のプロセスを楽しんでいます。ポルトガルでは湖おきで８月２6日から30日まで開かれる、Boom Festivalという野外ダンス・フェスティバルに行ってきます！ブログの更新はその後になるか、と。
